STUDY LINKS POLLUTION TO BIRTH DEFECTS
A study of newborns in New York City has
revealed that prenatal exposure to combustion-related urban air pollutants alters the structure of chromosomes (the carriers
of genes) of babies in the womb. This is the first study to show that environmental exposure during pregnancy to such pollutants
can cause a modest but significant increase in chromosomal abnormalities in fetal tissues.

Anger growing over Schiavo death
A political row has broken out in the US after the death of Terri Schiavo, the brain-damaged
woman at the heart of a long-running legal dispute.
Senior Republican Tom DeLay, who leads the House of Representatives, attacked the US
courts for allowing Mrs Schiavo to die, calling them "out of control".
Mrs Schiavo, 41, died in Florida on Thursday, 13 days after a feeding tube keeping
her alive was disconnected.
Her husband had fought for the tube's removal, saying it was what she wanted

SC notice to Centre, states on
Disability Act :
India News > New Delhi, Oct 25 : The Supreme
Court today issued notices to the Centre and all the states on a petition seeking implementation of the Disability Act which
provided for preferential allotment of residential plots to disabled persons.
The petitioner Slil Chaturvedi, a disabled
person, alleged that none of the states was implementing the provisions of 'The Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities,
Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995' which deals with formulation of schemes in favour of persons with
disabilities for preferential allotment of land at concessional rates for residential purposes. (PTI)
